How Gourmet Marshmallows Became the Adult Treat We Didn’t Know We Needed

How Gourmet Marshmallows Became the Adult Treat We Didn’t Know We Needed

There’s something nostalgic about marshmallows.

For most people, they bring back memories of campfires, childhood sleepovers, hot chocolate during winter, or sticky fingers after making s’mores in the kitchen. They’re comforting. Familiar. Simple.

But somewhere along the way, marshmallows got left behind as a “kids-only” treat.

Honestly, I never understood that.

Years ago, my daughter wanted a s’mores party for her birthday. We set everything up, the kids were excited, and the adults politely joined in… but it felt like the adults were just there watching the fun instead of actually enjoying it themselves.

That was the moment I started wondering:
What if marshmallows could feel a little more elevated? A little more exciting? Something adults would genuinely want to eat, gift, and talk about?

That idea eventually became The Fancy Marshmallow Co.

And honestly, it turns out adults were waiting for marshmallows to grow up too.

The Rise of Nostalgic Foods for Adults

Over the last few years, people have been leaning harder into comfort foods, nostalgic flavors, and small luxuries that feel special without being over-the-top expensive.

And it makes sense.

Not every gift needs to be extravagant.
Not every dessert needs to cost $18 at a restaurant.
Sometimes people just want something fun, thoughtful, and genuinely different.

That’s where gourmet marshmallows found their place.

They’re nostalgic, but unexpected.
Familiar, but elevated.

And unlike a generic candy box from a grocery store, artisan marshmallows feel personal. They spark conversation. People remember them.

Especially when the flavors go beyond vanilla.

Marshmallows Have Changed a Lot Since Childhood

When most people think of marshmallows, they picture the standard grocery store version.

Soft. Sweet. Predictable.

But handmade gourmet marshmallows are completely different.

At The Fancy Marshmallow Co., we create marshmallows in flavors people never expect to find in a marshmallow:

One of my favorite reactions from customers is:
“Wait… marshmallows can taste like this?”

Because most people don’t realize marshmallows can actually have depth, texture, tartness, crunch, or layered flavors.

They’re used to the mass-produced version.

We wanted to create something that felt more like opening a boutique dessert gift than grabbing candy off a shelf.

Why Packaging Actually Matters

One thing I noticed early on is that gifting isn’t only about what’s inside the box.

Presentation matters.

My background is in marketing, and I’ve always believed food gifts should feel intentional from the second someone opens them.

That’s why we put so much focus into creating packaging that feels elevated, polished, and giftable without pushing the product into an unrealistic luxury price point.

I never wanted our marshmallows to feel cheap.
But I also didn’t want customers feeling like they had to spend $80 just to send someone something thoughtful.

There’s a sweet spot between affordable and special.
That’s where we try to live.

Our  marshmallow boxes are designed to feel like a premium dessert experience while still being approachable enough to treat yourself “just because.”

And honestly, many customers do exactly that.

Questions We Get Asked All the Time

“Do your marshmallows contain pork gelatin?”

No — we use beef gelatin in our marshmallows.

“Can I make Rice Krispie treats with them?”

Not exactly in the traditional sense.

Our marshmallows don’t contain the preservatives and stabilizers found in many store-bought marshmallows, so they behave differently when melted down completely.

But a lot of customers chop them up and mix them into homemade treats for extra flavor and texture.

“Are they overly sweet?”

Surprisingly, no.

Because our flavors are layered and balanced, customers often say they’re less one-dimensional than traditional marshmallows.

The goal is flavor first — not just sugar.

Why People Are Sending Gourmet Marshmallows as Gifts

One of the biggest surprises has been seeing how often customers purchase these as gifts.

Birthdays.
Hostess gifts.
Thinking-of-you gifts.
Care packages.
Thank-you gifts.
Breakup gifts.
Corporate gifts.
Late-night impulse purchases.

People are tired of generic gifts.

They want something that feels personal without requiring a huge budget or weeks of planning.

A beautifully packaged dessert box with unique flavors feels memorable in a way people don’t expect.

And because marshmallows naturally spark curiosity, people tend to immediately open the box, try one, and start talking about it.

That experience matters.

Why Small Treats Matter More Right Now

I think people are craving small moments of joy again.

Not everything has to be extravagant to feel meaningful.

Sometimes it’s just:

  • discovering a flavor you weren’t expecting,
  • sending a friend something thoughtful,
  • or opening a beautiful dessert box after a long week.

That’s part of why I love marshmallows specifically.

They feel playful.
But when done well, they can also feel elevated, nostalgic, and surprisingly memorable.

And honestly, the world could use more little moments like that.
